Application

Application Application in petroleum processing DMSO is used as an extraction solvent in the extraction of aromatics, which was first adopted by the French IFP method and was presented at the 35-nation Chemical Conference in Warsaw.
Its advantages are: (1) high selectivity for aromatics; (2) Unlimited miscibility of aromatics at room temperature; (3) Low extraction temperature, and does not react with alkanes, olefins, and water; (4) No corrosion, non-toxic; (5) Simple extraction process, less equipment, energy saving; (6) Insoluble olefins are suitable for oils with high olefins; (7) Solvent recovery can be used for reverse extraction. It is superior to Shell's Sulfinol method and Universal's Udcx method. China Beijing, Liaoyang Petrochemical Company has been used in the introduction of equipment.

DMSO is insoluble to alkanes, so it is used in the refining of food wax, edible white oil and the detection of cancer agents.

DMSO is easily soluble to acetylene, and each liter of DMSO can dissolve 33 liters of acetylene, while acetone can only dissolve 25 liters of acetylene. DMSO has a high boiling point and is easy to recover and regenerate. Therefore, it is used in LPG acetylene recovery and dissolved acetylene production.

DMSO is easily soluble to organic sulfide, aromatics and alkynes, and is often used in the refining of lubricating oil and diesel oil. DMSO and water do not freeze at 40% -60ºC. Therefore, DMSO is used in gasoline, aviation coal anti-icing agent, and automobile antifreeze in cold areas. It can be used as a reaction solvent in the production of fuel oil additive ferrocene to accelerate the reaction of sodium with ferric chloride and increase the yield. In the production of nitroalkanes, the direct reaction of sodium nitrite with chloroalkanes in DMSO has a high yield. Recently, there are many reports in petroleum processing, and new uses are constantly being developed, especially in the industrial production of diesel refining abroad.
Applications in synthetic fibers The application of DMSO in acrylic fiber spinning was first patented by Japanese Toyo Rayon Co., LTD., so that acrylonitrile was polymerized in DMSO, without separation, and directly spun in a water bath to obtain bulky, soft and easy to dye artificial wool. Its advantages are simplified process, high solubility, high solvent boiling point, non-toxic, easy recovery, good product performance, low cost. Some acrylic plants in Yuci, Dalian and Beijing, Shanxi, China, are produced by this process. It has also recently been used in the production of carbon fibers from polypropionitrile. It is used to refine terephthalate in the production of polyester resin abroad. In addition, in the production of PVC, DMSO spinning, acrylonitrile copolymerization are used.
Application in pharmaceutical production As a reaction solvent, DMSO is widely used in the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates. For example, the reaction of potassium fluoride with 3, 4-dichloronitrobenzene in DMSO to produce chloroaniline is widely used in the production of floxacin and trifluoro-nitrotoluene, ofloxacin and other fluorine-containing drugs. India is one of the leading countries in the production of fluorinated drugs, so DMSO imports are around 4500t per year. DMSO has been applied in the synthesis of berberine, nicotinate inositol, sucrose fatty acid polyester and extraction of traditional Chinese medicine.
Application in medical treatment DMSO has solution and permeability to many drugs, and itself has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, promotes blood circulation and wound healing, and has diuretic and antistatic effects. It can increase drug absorption and improve curative effect, so it is called "universal medicine" in foreign countries. Various drugs are dissolved in DMSO, and can penetrate into the body without oral administration or injection, which opens up a new way of drug administration. More importantly, it improves the local drug content in the disease area and reduces the harm of other drugs in the body. There are many reports on medical studies abroad. In China, a comprehensive toxicological test and pathological autopsy were conducted by Shenyang Pharmaceutical University, Beijing Institute of Pharmaceutical Research, and China Drug Testing Center in the 1960s, which proved that the LG50 value of the half amount of DMSO in China was (22.4±1.4)g/kg, basically consistent with the 21.4g/kg reported in foreign literature. It is non-toxic and consistent with pathological autopsy findings. The Beijing Institute of Materia Medica used sarcomysin, B518, C6323, NA and other drugs to use sarcomysin, tumor local, achieved good curative effect, significantly inhibit tumor growth. In animal experiments, after anatomical detection, the local drug concentration is 2 to 8 times higher than that of other drugs. Foreign studies believe that cancer cells have a cutin protective film, which prevents the entry of drugs, and DMSO has the ability to dissolve and penetrate diagonal substances, so it can improve the curative effect. In the 1960s, 160 medical units such as Peking Union Medical College Hospital conducted clinical trials, and set up special clinics in Benxi, accumulating a large amount of data, which has been proved to be effective in neurodermatitis, psoriasis, arthritis, bursitis, folliculitis, rheumatoid disease, otitis media, rhinitis, appendicitis, toothache, blister, hemorrhoids, sprains, lumbar muscle strain, burns, trauma and so on. At present, the production of Guyouling, beriberi medicine, Fuhydropine ointment and other external drugs and major hospitals have been widely used in the external preparations. The Institute of Veterinary Medicine of Chinese Academy of Sciences treated equine poverty and parasitic diseases with DMSOdissolving "Paz". Especially in the Chinese medicine extraction preparation, the content of useful components is increased, and the efficacy is improved.
Application in pesticide and agricultural fertilizer DMSO is a solvent, penetrant and synergist for pesticides and agricultural fertilizers. It has been reported in foreign countries that antibiotics are dissolved in DMSO to treat fruit tree rot, insecticides are dissolved in DMSO to kill insects in trees and fruits, and 0.5‰ solution is sprayed in soybean flowering period to increase production by 10%~15%. After adding 5‰DMSO in various fertilizer aqueous solutions, it is more likely to cause human poisoning.

It has been used in fruit mycosis in China. In the plant experiment, DMSO aqueous solution was prepared with non-permeable drugs and dyes, and applied to the trunk. 12h later, it was found that the branches, leaves, roots and fruits contained amounts or colors, and then disappeared after 24h. These results indicate that the drugs and pigments dissolved in DMSO can penetrate, circulate, and be excreted through metabolism, which shows the application prospect of DMSO in agriculture and needs to be studied in the future.
Application in dyes After using DMSO in the production of Rendanshi Linlan, Jilin Dye plant has greatly improved its production capacity and yield, and Sichuan Dye plant is still using DMSO. It has been reported that the addition of DMSO in printing and dyeing can make the dyeing even and eliminate the color difference.
Application in coatings DMSO is widely used as solvent, co-solvent and antifreeze in water-emulsion paint. Because DMSO has good solubility to various resins, it is used as a solubilizer in some paints. The more important use is as a paint remover. The addition of alkali or nitric acid to DMSO can remove various paint films, including epoxy resins.
Application in antifreeze The freezing point of pure DMSO is 18.45ºC, and the DMSO with 40% water is not frozen at -60ºC, and DMSO releases heat when mixed with water and snow. This property makes DMSO can be used as automotive antifreeze, brake oil, hydraulic fluid components. Ethylene glycol antifreeze is not suitable for low temperatures above -40 ° C. And lower than DMSO boiling point, toxic, easy to produce gas resistance. DMSO antifreeze is used in the northern cold region for deicing agent, paint, various latex antifreeze, gasoline, aviation antifreeze, bone marrow, blood, low temperature preservation antifreeze and so on.

Applications in gas separation The solubility of DMSO to aromatics, alkynes, sulfides, nitrogen dioxide is used as gas separation solvent in petroleum processing, chemical tail gas recovery and gas separation.
Applications in synthetic resins DMSO was used as the polymerization solvent of polysulfone resin in production. DMSO is soluble to many natural resins and synthetic resins, and can be dissolved to nylon, polyester and polyvinyl chloride resins in medium heat. DMSO is used for the processing of artificial leather, and can also be used as a cleaning agent for polyurethane reactor and a solvent for acrylonitrile copolymerization.
Application in coking by-product In the production of anthraquinone, used for anthracene refining. By adding DMSO to anthracene oil to extract refined anthracene, the extraction content can reach more than 98%, and the DMSO recovery process is simple without water. It also has applications outside China in naphthalene refining, and is used to recover organic sulfide in coke oven gas separation.

DMSO is used as an extraction additive for gold, platinum, niobium, tantalum, rhenium and radioactive elements to improve the selectivity, solubility and low-temperature crystallization of antifreeze.
Used in electronics industry DMSO is used as an electrolyte for farad class, ultra-large capacity capacitors - liquid double electric layer capacitors. Current capacitors have only a microfarad capacity, and this capacitor can reach 1 to 100 farads. Such as: Japan 3~5V10F, the United States 1.6V 100F capacitors, used for solar power supply systems as energy storage components, electronic computers and robots information protection power supply and memory components. DMSO is widely used in electronic components and integrated circuit cleaning, which has the function of one-time removal of organic matter, inorganic matter and polymer, and is non-toxic, tasteless and easy to recycle.
Application in organic synthesis DMSO plays the dual role of reaction solvent and reaction test in chemical reaction. It can smoothly carry out some reactions that cannot be realized in DMSO. It can accelerate and catalyze some chemical reactions, improve the yield and reform the product performance.

1. Nucleophilic substitution reaction :DMSO is a nucleophilic dissociation solvent for halides and sulfonates, which can generate admixtures, and the reaction rate is 155 times faster than the general aprotic solvent, which plays an important role in the alkylation reaction.

Alkyl halides react with inorganic cyanide to produce nitrile, which is not easy to react. The reaction rate is fast and the yield is high in DMSO. The conversion of sodium nitrite to nitro with alkyl halides or A-haloesters has a similar effect.

Aromatic fluoride is not easily prepared by Swarts reaction, but in DMSO, potassium fluoride and chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons are easily replaced to obtain fluorine exchange with high yield. Bromobenzene can form phenylene tert-butyl ether without heat in DMSO.

2. Elimination reaction: Benzyl alcohol and aliphatic tertiary alcohol are dilute in DMSO, sulfonate and halogenated alkene are heated in DMSO. The Cope elimination reaction can be carried out smoothly in DMSO at room temperature, and the reaction rate is 105 times faster than that in water.

3. Electrophilic substitution reaction: The electrophilic substitution reaction on some saturated carbon atoms in DMSO can be carried out quickly. For example, when sodium enol salt is alkylated with alkyl halides in benzene, 0.65mol/L concentration of DMSO can make the reaction, which is 20 times faster in DMSO than in dioxane. The exchange rate of hydrogen-deuterium in organic matter under the catalysis of base is 109 times higher in DMSO than in alcohol. The asymmetric A-carbon racemization rate in DMSO is 106 times higher.

4. Double rearrangement: In DMSO, double bond rearrangement can be generated by potassium catalysis, and the reaction can be carried out uniformly at low temperature.

5. Other reactions: Many studies have reported the use of DMSO as a reaction solvent. Such as: quaternary amination of triethylamine and iodoethane, transesterification of higher fatty acids and glycerides, esterification of non-reducing sugars in the presence of sodium alcohol, cyanoethylation of alcohols, catalytic reaction of mercaptan, etc., all have accelerated effects in DMSO. DMSO can also be used as a reaction solvent in ester condensation and polymer polymers. Such as :Dicckmann reaction, dextran depolymerization, pancreatic conformational transformation, acylation and so on.

In short, DMSO opens up a new way in chemical preparation, speeds up the chemical reaction speed, improves the yield, and prepares many new substances. It is not only a solvent, but also a new means of chemical reaction, which is of great significance in theory and practice.
Application in hydrothermal synthesis In the process of hydrothermal synthesis, it can be used as a solvent, and DMSO in the reactor will decompose above 120 ° C, producing toxic gases, dizziness symptoms, and a very unpleasant smell. Pay attention to protection when using, if the temperature exceeds 120 ° C, the kettle should be opened in the fume hood, and with a gas mask.
Application in cell cryopreservation Dimethyl sulfoxide is an important osmotic cell protector. In the process of cryopreservation, it is necessary to use a cryoprotectant containing DMSO to prevent damage caused by the formation of intracellular liquid ice crystals, changes in osmotic pressure, and disturbances in cell structure during cryopreservation of cells at low temperature (minus 200 degrees Celsius). DMSO can quickly penetrate the cell membrane into the cell, reduce the freezing point, delay the freezing process, increase the concentration of intracellular ions, reduce the formation of intracellular ice crystals, and thus reduce cell damage. The cytotoxicity of DSO was inhibited at low temperature. When resuscitating action should be fast, as soon as possible to wash off DSO, otherwise it will cause serious toxicity to the cell. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is the best cell preservative at present, but it is also a chemical test agent with high cytotoxicity. The results showed that when the concentration of DMSO in culture medium was 10%, the inhibition rate of cell growth was nearly 100%. At the concentration of 1‰, the inhibition rate was 35%, and even at the concentration of 0.04‰, DMSO had adverse effects on the growth of cells.
Application in PCR Adding 5% glycerol or 5% DMSO to PCR system MIX can enhance the specificity and inhibit the formation of primer dimer.

Basic use
At the same time, chromium chloride, manganese chloride and other transition metal halides and potassium chloride, sodium chloride and other halides have a certain solubility in DMSO, so they can be used in organic electrochemistry.
Dimethyl sulfoxide is widely used as a solvent and reaction reagent, especially as a processing solvent and drawing solvent in acrylonitrile polymerization, as a polyurethane synthesis and drawing solvent, as a synthetic solvent of polyamide, polyimide and polysulfone resin, and as a solvent for aromatics, butadiene extraction and synthesis of chlorofluoraniline.
DMSO is dimethyl sulfoxide and has a wide range of uses. Used as a solvent for acetylene, aromatics and other gases and as a spinning solvent for acrylic fibers. It is a very important aprotic polar solvent soluble in both water and organic solvents. It is highly permeable to the skin and helps the drug penetrate into the human body. It can also be used as an additive to pesticides. It's also a very important chemical agent.
DMSO is also a osmotic protective agent, which can reduce the freezing point of cells, reduce the formation of ice crystals, reduce the damage of free radicals to cells, and change the permeability of biofilms to electrolytes, drugs, poisons and metabolites.
However, studies have shown that DMSO has a certain toxic effect, which interacts with protein hydrophobic groups, leading to protein denaturation, and has vascular toxicity and hepatorenal toxicity.
DMSO has a certain toxic effect, when using to avoid its volatilization, to prepare 1%-5% of ammonia water for backup, after the skin with a lot of water and dilute ammonia wash.
The most common are nausea, vomiting, skin rashes, and garlic, onion, and oyster smells on the skin and in exhaled breath.
Inhalation: High volatile concentrations may cause headache, dizziness and sedation.
Skin: Can burn the skin and make the skin tingle, as seen in rashes and blisters. Dimethyl sulfoxide produces a thermal reaction if it comes into contact with hydrated skin. Avoid contact with dimethyl sulfoxide solution containing toxic raw materials or substances, because its toxicity is not known, but dimethyl sulfoxide may penetrate the skin, under certain conditions will bring toxic substances into the skin.
Absorption: Absorption risk is very low.

Industrial use

Dimethyl sulfoxide is a very important aprotic polar solvent soluble in both water and organic solvents. Widely used as a solvent and reaction reagent, with high selective extraction capacity. Dimethyl sulfoxide itself has anti-inflammatory analgesic, diuretic, sedative and other effects, in the pharmaceutical industry can be directly used as the raw material and carrier of some drugs. It is known as a "cure-all" and is often added to medicines as an active component of pain relief drugs.

1.used for aromatic extraction, resin and dye reaction medium, acrylic fiber polymerization, drawing solvent, etc
2.can be used as organic solvent, reaction medium and organic synthesis intermediates. Extremely versatile. This product has high selective extraction ability, used as acrylic resin and polysulfone resin polymerization and condensation solvent, polyacrylonitrile and acetic acid fiber polymerization drawing solvent, alkane and aromatics separation extraction solvent, used in aromatics, butadiene extraction, acrylic fiber spinning, plastic solvent and organic synthetic dyes, pharmaceutical and other industries reaction medium. In medicine, dimethyl sulfoxide has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, and has strong permeability to the skin, so it can dissolve some drugs, so that such drugs can penetrate into the human body to achieve therapeutic purposes. Using this carrier property of dimethyl sulfoxide, it can also be used as an additive to pesticides. Adding a small amount of dimethyl sulfoxide to some pesticides helps the pesticide penetrate into the plant to improve its efficacy. Dimethyl sulphoxide can also be used as a dyeing solvent, stain remover and dyeing carrier of synthetic fibers, and can also be used as an absorber for recovering acetylene, synthetic fiber modifier, antifreeze, capacitive media, brake oil, rare metal extractor and so on.
3.used as an analytical reagent and gas chromatography fixed liquid, but also used as a solvent in ultraviolet spectral analysis
4.transdermal accelerator. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DSO) is one of the earliest transdermal osmotic accelerators, which may be related to its solvent properties. Dimethyl sulfoxide can denature proteins in keratinocytes. It can destroy the orderly arrangement of lipids between stratum corneum cells. It can remove cuticle lipids and lipoproteins and enhance the penetration of drugs, but when using high concentrations of dimethyl sulfoxide, the skin will produce erythema, blisters and irreversible damage, which has been banned in the United States. The commonly used concentration is 30%-50%.
5. Antifreeze. The freezing point of pure dimethyl sulfoxide is 18.45 ºC, and the dimethyl sulfoxide with 40% water is not frozen at 60ºC, and the dimethyl sulfoxide is hot when mixed with water and snow. Therefore, it is convenient to make automotive antifreeze, brake oil and hydraulic fluid components. Ethylene glycol antifreeze is no longer suitable at a low temperature of more than -40 ° C, and has a lower boiling point than dimethyl sulfoxide, which is toxic and easy to produce gas resistance. Dimethyl sulfoxide antifreeze is used in cars and tanks in the northern cold areas, and can be supplemented with snow instead of water at any time. Dimethyl sulfoxide is also used in deicing agents, coatings, anti-freeze of various latex, gasoline, aviation antifreeze, bone marrow, blood, organ low temperature preservation of antifreeze.

Collapse edit this paragraph synthesis method

Dimethyl sulfoxide is generally obtained by dimethyl sulfide oxidation process, because of the different oxidants and oxidation methods used, so there are different production processes.
1. Methanol carbon disulfide method
Methanol and carbon disulfide were used as raw materials, γ-Al2O3 was used as catalyst to synthesize dimethyl sulfide, and then oxidized with nitrogen dioxide (or nitric acid) to obtain dimethyl sulfoxide.
3. Nitrogen dioxide method
Dimethyl sulfide was prepared by methanol and hydrogen sulfide in the presence of γ-alumina. Sulfuric acid reacts with sodium nitrite to form nitrogen dioxide; Dimethyl sulfide and nitrogen dioxide are oxidized in gas and liquid phase at 60-80ºC to produce crude dimethyl sulfoxide, or directly oxidized with oxygen to produce crude dimethyl sulfoxide, and then distilled under reduced pressure to produce dimethyl sulfoxide. This method is a relatively advanced production method.
4. Dimethyl sulfate method
Dimethyl sulfide was prepared by reacting dimethyl sulfate with sodium sulfide. Sulfuric acid reacts with sodium nitrite to form nitrogen dioxide; The crude dimethyl sulfoxide was oxidized with nitrogen dioxide, then neutralized and distilled to obtain refined dimethyl sulfoxide. In addition, dimethyl sulfoxide was produced from dimethyl sulfide by anodic oxidation.
Refining method: After decompressive distillation of dimethylsulfoxide, add alumina and place overnight, use a distillation column 50cm high and filled with pottery saddle-shaped packing to carry out decompressive distillation at 266.6~399.9Pa at 50ºC, collect the middle fraction. Or the dimethyl sulfoxide and CaH2 are heated together for a day, after vacuum distillation, dry with molecular sieve, and then vacuum distillation under nitrogen flow. It can also be refined by fractional crystallization.
5. Dimethyl sulfide (prepared by the reaction of dimethyl sulfate with sodium sulfide) and nitrogen dioxide (prepared by the reaction of sulfuric acid with sodium nitrite) were oxidized in gas and liquid phase at 60~80ºC to obtain dimethyl sulfoxide crude product, and then vacuum distillation, dehydration by molecular sieve and then vacuum rectification, to obtain the finished dimethyl sulfoxide. The main reaction formula is:
6. Take acetone as the buffer medium, add dimethyl sulfide of equal weight, stir the reaction, maintain the temperature of 20ºC:

After the reaction, the high purity dimethyl sulfoxide can be obtained by direct vacuum distillation.
